My Cameras and Lenses

I am often asked by budding wedding photographers, and the occasional bride and groom, what equipment I use.   So I thought I would create this page to those interested in the technical elements of my wedding photography.   Scroll down to take a look at some of the main gear I use - those in the know will recognise straight away that the collection I possess is of the very best possible quality available today.

The Main Camera

Nikon D850.  This DSLR is widely considered among the serious camera experts to be the finest DSLR camera ever manufactured.  It has a huge Full Frame 47 megapixel sensor, class leading dynamic range, coupled with the latest camera technology available, with super fast auto focus, makes this an easy choice for me to appoint as the head of my arsenal.  This DSLR has the lowest native ISO (64) of any camera today.   It is the ultimate low light tool.  The Camera is a joy to own and use, and you will be thrilled with the results it produces, just as I am.

The Main Lens

Sigma 50mm f1.4.   I find it difficult sometimes to relay in words just how wonderful and special this lens is.   I find that it is much more effective to take just a few shots with this glass on my camera and you can instantly see what all the fuss is about.   Supremely sharp and one of the brightest lenses available (f1.4)   This is coupled to my main camera, the Nikon D850, and is my most used lens on the day.   It's the ultimate lens for dark Church's and other low light situations, and the images it produces are second to none.

The Portrait and Back up Camera

Nikon D780.   The perfect choice for a super sharp classic portrait of the couple.   A very respectable 24 megapixal sensor, regarded by most of us as the sweet spot, housed inside one of Nikons most up to date DSLR camera's.   The perfect camera to accompany the main camera.  Again, a Full Frame Camera just the same as the D850, and is capable of accommodating all my Nikon Lens's just in case anything goes wrong with the main camera.

The Portrait Lens

This is one of Nikons sharpest ever lenses.   This 105mm has been in production for over two decades and has been so successful that Nikon has seen no reason to discontinue it or update it.   The perfect piece of glass to go with the Close Up camera.   This lens is for the photographer who knows exactly how to get the best out of its extraordinary character, with its bespoke defocus control dial.   This lens has the ability to create its own bokeh at any aperture by twisting the dial.

The Candid Reportage Camera

Leica.   The most renowned name in cameras since the early 1900's.    Unmatched build quality, discreet size, and minimalistic finish with that famous red dot that immediately distinguishes it from the rest of the pack.   This camera is the third camera that I use in my set up for the day.   Fantastic at capturing those candid, reportage looking shots.  Fantastic for black and white images, and an absolute must inside the Church.   Unusually this has a fixed lens - 28mm f1.7 - its a full frame camera, and boasts an incredible 45 megapixels.   It is quite frankly the most capable and envied point and shoot available today.   Nothing comes even close.

The Movie Camera

Fuji X-H2S.   This is the essentially the Movie Camera.   Okay, it can still do remarkable stills photos, but I use this almost exclusively for filming.   It can record anything up to 6K internally without any additional equipment.   It is coupled with fuji's dedicated movie lens the 18-120mm specifically manufactured for this movie camera.   Fujifilm have long been regarded as among the finest camera's for making movies, not just because of the incredible range of recording formats they offer internally, but also because of their internal "Film Simulations" such as Eternal Bleach, Provia, Astia Soft, and numerous others.   These film simulations enable the client to choose the type of movie finish that they are looking for, without the need for heavy post production.    It simply comes straight out of camera.   A remarkable camera.

Nikon 70-200mm f2.8

This beast of a lens is normally found in every professional photographers bag.  A very versatile lens that has been built like a tank, weighs a ton, and is excellent at getting pin sharp images to those far away hard to reach places that I come across once in a while.   Every now and then I find myself being stuck in the back of the Church with no ability to move around for one reason or another, and that's where this serious piece of kit comes into it's own.   I will often use this lens at Weddings of particularly large venues where guests are dispersed all over the place, or if I need to just plant myself in one spot and simply utilise the vast coverage range that this lens offers.   A terrific lens that I have enjoyed from the very beginning of my photography.

Nikon 24-70mm f2.8

This is a great lens to have as my back up.   I could probably shoot an entire wedding with this lens alone.   The reason I dont normally, is because there are better, brighter, lighter lenses that I have already mentioned above.   Don't get me wrong, this is one heck of a professional lens that costs more than most camera's, and this lens would be my go to Lens for any Landscape outings that I like to do in my pastime.   But for me, you cannot beat the quality and results of the finest primes (shown above) and thats why I have the very best at all my Weddings.

The Lighting

I always bring along to EVERY wedding this entire set of portable lighting.   You just never know with the British weather!    I can always guarantee a bright outcome with these portable and powerful flashlights.   They will light up any dull or dark reception rooms, and I also use them when facing the Sun where the Bride and Groom have their backs to the Sun.    These are particularly useful on very cloudy days where I can use them either "off camera" or "on camera" to brighten up all the faces, and details, of guests and couples.   You need never worry about the weather or dark environments, these can handle everything.
